Ep. 36 — Chapter 3 from "Blood of Elves" (Part 3)

Anita and Karolina from Witcher Kitchen and Nerds Kitchen join Alyssa for Part 3 of our discussion of Andrzej Sapkowski’s first Witcher novel Blood of Elves, Chapter 3. Very important bits include: our first first-hand look at the Second Battle of Sodden, how Ciri’s guardians parent against her desire for revenge, a sure-fire guide to translating Polish through context clues, “Everything is Geralt’s fault”, five hours of pleasure, and—most importantly—the promise of hope.

This episode is available at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Stitcher.

Transcript to come.

ALYSSA (VOICEOVER): Before we continue with the episode, we're gonna hand it over to Lars from WitcherFlix for recent news on the Netflix show. When we come back, Anita, Karolina, and I will continue our discussion of Blood of Elves, Chapter 3.

“Tidings from Toussaint”

LARS FROM WITCHERFLIX: Hey, it's Lars from WitcherFlix and this is "Tidings from Toussaint". Welcome back everybody! This week is Geeked Week and Netflix had announced that some Witcher news would be coming in the week from June 7 to June 11. Unfortunately until now the Witcher has not played a role in Netflix's Geeked Week—yet. But tomorrow, Friday 11 will be the day when a rumored Witcher teaser, a release date for Season 2, and maybe even more stuff like interviews with show runner Lauren Hissrich or some new set photos might be released. Watch the Netflix's live stream on YouTube on June 11 at 9 am PST and keep your fingers crossed for some Witcher news!

Luckily there are some interesting things to report about the Witcher prequel miniseries "Blood Origin" as well. Redanian Intelligence posted several audition tapes and their transcriptions for some very interesting characters that will appear in the show. Some of them might be codenamed, so the characters' names might not be final. Others we already know from earlier casting calls. Let's start with a character named "Utharis". He seems to be a cynical sellsword. In an audition tape this character is talking to a king named "Gandal the Golden" and an unnamed prince about another character named "Balor" who is a high-ranking druid and according to Redanian Intelligence a very big role in the show. We don't know if the other two characters will appear on the final show. Gandal the Golden sounds a lot like Gandalf the Grey which is a definite nod the famous wizard from Lord of the Rings, so I suppose at least a name-change is very likely.

The next character that appears in these audition tapes is a male character named "Salliche", who is described as a bright young elf, maybe a scholar or a scientist. He is married to Ka’ali, a handmaid to royalty. The casting call for Kaali was posted not long ago. In it she was described as a sweet handmaid and a dedicated and loving wife to a genius, who supports him in his work. It is interesting that the character of Salliche blames himself in the transcription for a terrible, unspecified tragedy in the past.

Last but not least, there is another character. Formerly codenamed "G", we now know that this female character is actually named Gwyn. Her casting call was also posted not too long ago. Her description in it reads as follows: "A brilliantly sharp minded assassin with restricted growth. This character is a true wildcard, unafraid of carnage, violence and chaos. In fact, she revels in it."

Anyway guys, that's all for today. I hope you all stay safe and well. We'll talk again in the next episode of Breakfast in Beauclair. Until then, thanks again for listening and good luck on the path!
