GARY FROM KENTUCKY: Hello, I’m Gary from Kentucky, the resident Dungeon Master for Breakfast in Beauclair’s international Hanza. In the last six months, our community’s D&D campaigns have grown to four per week, featuring 19 players across 7 countries and 3 continents. If you don’t know much about D&D, or Dungeons & Dragons, it’s collaborative storytelling done in groups, with every player contributing to the story by rolling dice and role playing as adventurers in a high fantasy world. If you love adventure movies like Princess Bride and Willow, banter between heroic characters, or choose your own adventures, then the hanza’s D&D games are for you.

There’s been a lot that has happened over the four games, including heroic dragon slaying, treacherous dungeon delving, lovers quarrels, character deaths, and jokes that make some players and viewers feel like they’re enchanted by a laughter spell. For a moment, I’ll share one such heroic moment with you:

North of the village of Oakhurst, a group of five adventurers have set out in search of another party that came this way to clear out a cave. The cave is special to the locals, who come here to collect fruit that has healing properties from an ancient tree. The party has traveled a few hours with no sign of the party nor the cave. Yrel, a Half-Elf and the party’s Ranger, scouts out a pair of stone pillars with goblinoid writing scrawled on them. None of the party can read it, so they search the area and quickly find a ravine just beyond the pillars that descends 300 feet. Emilia, a Wood Elf and the party’s Paladin, spies a small outcropping that is only 50 feet down. The outcropping has a campfire and, from what they can see, a grouping of ruined tents, the first sign of the other group. The party deliberates on a way to descend before coming to an agreement on tying the rope they have to the pillar and making the climb down, it will be dangerous but it’s their only option. Or so they believe.

The first two that descend are Versius, a human and party’s Bloodhunter, and Talia, another Wood Elf and the party’s Druid. Both successfully climb down without issue and search the campsite. Versius searches the ruined tents only to find what remains of some traveling gear, while Talia searches the fire and discovers that it still has warmth! The party can’t be far! Just then, the pair hear a scream from above! They look up and see that Dagna, a dwarf and the party’s Sorceress, has let go of the rope and is plummeting towards them! Versius dives out of the way and Talia is too late to act! Dagna slams into the ground and doesn’t move. The rest of the party come to her aid. Luckily, Dagna is made of heartier stuff, she slowly gets back up with the help of Talia’s healing magic and dusts herself off. The party looks forward down a stony slope towards the entrance of an ancient temple. “This must be where the other party went.” They will have to go in, but first catch their breath and rest.

Each of the characters in this story were played by members of the hanza, with me narrating the events that are influenced by their dice rolls. Versius’ search, Talia’s investigation, Yrel’s scouting out things, Emilia seeing the outcropping, and even Dagna’s fall was the result of a critical failure that nearly took her life in the first game of the campaign!

If you would like to hear more of these collaborative stories, then join us on the Hanza Discord at bit.ly/thehanzadiscord to spectate one of the four games each week. European games start at 7PM CET/1PM EST and American games usually start at 7PM EST/4PM PST. Follow Breakfast in Beauclair on Twitch at twitch.tv/breakfastinbeauclair and hit the alert bell to be on the lookout for upcoming live games. Until then, they’re hosted on the Hanza’s Discord server at, once again, bit.ly/thehanzadiscord.

Hope you’ll join us for our next story.
