Ep. 120 — Netflix’s ‘Sirens of the Deep’

Emily R. from the US and Kyle R. from the US join Alyssa for our discussion of Netflix’s ‘Sirens of the Deep’. Very important bits include: adapting the Witcher for animation, Melusina’s fairytale roots, Geralt’s dalliances, how the film fits into Season 1, (Jaskier’s Version) of events, and which ‘Little Mermaid’ ‘Sirens of the Deep’ may really reference?

ALYSSA (VOICEOVER):

Geralt and Jaskier arrive in Bremervoord, where Geralt is contracted to kill an Allamorax blamed for fishermen's deaths. The creature pulls him underwater, where a mer-family convinces him it acted out of hunger, not malice. He releases it and forfeits his fee.

At the local Imbaelk Festival, Jaskier reunites with Essi Daven ("Little Eye") a childhood friend and now bard. The festival is graced with the presence of King Usveldt; Zelest, the king's illegitimate son; and Prince Agloval who in a relationship with the mermaid princess, Sh'eenaz. When a dying fisherman arrives at the festival with news of an attack at sea, Geralt is pressed into preventing war between Bremervoord and the merpeople.

The investigation reveals that Melusina, Sh'eenaz's aunt and the queen's estranged sister, has been shapeshifting into a kraken to attack the humans, in conspiracy with King Usveldt. She seeks revenge against her sister for taking both the throne and the merking, her former lover. Sh'eenaz, as their daughter, is the living symbol of everything Melusina lost. Meanwhile, Usveldt attempts to use the war between kingdoms to secure his own legacy and line on the throne. Exposed, Melusina and Usveldt push the conflict into open war. Zelest, confronted with his father's treachery, defects, and is killed by Melusina. In the battle, Usvelt injures Sh'eenaz and Geralt kills Melusina from within.

With the war ended, Agloval confronts his father: rather than asking Sh'eenaz to become human, he becomes a merman. Geralt and Essi spend one night together before parting amicably in the morning. Geralt and Jaskier depart for Caingorn.
